We awoke in Los Angeles on Monday, April ??, at 5 a.m. Thirty-one hours later our heads hit the pillows in Bergen, Norway. In between we flew non-stop from L.A. To London. Landing in London was eerie. The fog was low, clinging to the ground, and at the moment the tires hit the pavement there was still zero visibility. Then we flew from London to Copenhagen. Finally, from Copenhagen to Bergen. In each airport we had access to the premier fliers' lounge. The best was in Copenhagen where the elite lounge was divided into "nice" and "really nice". We were in the "really nice" one which meant better snacks: dark, thin breads smeared lightly with an herbed cream cheese with sun-dried tomatoes, mildly sweet cucumber slices and smoked ham. The flight over Norway and into Bergen was spectacular. The land mass is very island-like in that it rises like a hilly mesa from the water. It is criss-crossed with dramatic canyons. Parts of it are covered in snow. Some canyons are filled in with glaciers. Over all the terrain is gray and stony or lushly green rolling hills. Here and there are gorgeous fairy-tale-like hamlets dotted with colorful wooden cabins with steeply pitched roofes sitting on a bed of intense green grass that spills into a bay. Our hotel is connected to the famous waterfront wooden shanties that are the postcard image of Bergen and are one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Our first meal after checking into the hotel was in an ancient barn like structure. Our table was on a stone floor with a significant downhill slant to it so we sat at an uneven angle and ate our light meal which was salmon cured in aquavit served on roasted sweet asparagus and a similarly cured Reindeer meat (Reindeer sushi)served over fresh raw sliced cranberries. Now we have just woken up to our first full day and will start with breakfast, then the fish market, Edvard Grieg's house and a funicular ride to a vista point.
